A New Year always brings with it the usual set of resolutions, which honestly have very little chance of being achieved, the excitement of a whole twelve months of new perfume releases, and also a little bit of tradition. Before heading into the ever-expanding world of fragrance, many people look forward to switching out their festive home scents in favour of some January newness. It’s a relatively inexpensive treat after the excesses of the holiday season, and one that you can easily achieve with the last of the Christmas money. This January I’ve plumped for the comforting Pinede Candle from Tessa Williams.
There are certain companies and individuals that regularly appear on this website, and that’s because they offer a varied selection of both products and scents. I first reviewed Tessa Williams back in 2017, at that time it was the Fire Room Spray from her Elements Collection, and she would go on to be featured a total of eight times over the next six years. Well, we’re about to hit the number nine mark with the latest addition to her Travel Collection. This time we’re heading to Juan-les-Pins in the South of France, and in particular La Pinède.
Right in the centre of the town you’ll find this pine grove which, quite rightly, is referred to as the green lung of the town. It sits close to the sea, and so you can already start to imagine the combination of aromas that both the water and the trees provide to those that take a moment to stop and breathe them in. However, La Pinède is far more than simply a park. It’s also a place where the tradition of jazz is kept alive in the open air thanks to the international jazz festival that takes place during July and August every year.
Jazz à Juan began in 1960 and, in those sixty-three years, has seen the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davies and Michel Legrand perform for its worldwide audiences. Tessa Williams wanted to capture a little of that excitement at seeing a legend perform, the exhilaration of hearing jazz played in the open air, and the incredible combination of blue chords against a black sky. This latest scent continues her collection that has already enjoyed stops at Cadaques, Marrakech and even the lemon groves of Positano, but this time it gets a little bit musical. So, it’s time to take a breather and enjoy the jazz-inspired Pinede.
The scent opens with the promised aroma of sappy pine needles and campherous lavender, both of which have been warmed by the summer sunshine, and the combination of bergamot and tart lemon provide that heat. However, the appearance of a resinous amber accord starts to push you more towards the evening’s entertainment, and a touch of salty skin in the blend even hints that the daytime may have been spent on the beach. You also have a note of lime and tonka bean in here that adds a delicious contrast of flavours before, as a final bow, a whisper of leather completes the perfect aroma for the New Year.
The Pinede Candle is available from the Tessa Williams website at tesswilliams.co.uk priced at £35, although she is also currently offering a 15% discount with the code NEWYEAR15. [Sample provided by Tessa Williams]
