STEPHAN'S SIX - JODIE PRENGER

Jodie Prenger shot to fame as winner of the BBC television show I’d Do Anything, in which the prize was to play the role of Nancy in Oliver at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. That was back in 2009, and since then Jodie has gone on to star in Spamalot, Calamity Jane, Street Of Dreams, alongside many TV and radio appearances. I caught up with her before she started rehearsing for her new musical to ask her “Stephan’s Six”.

What is the first smell that you can remember?
The first smell, this sounds so bad, is probably my nan’s roast dinner. I think it’s just that warmth of home isn't it. Funnily enough I don’t like it now. People say that they like lamb but it tastes like “sheep” to me. I know that sounds ridiculous, I know it sounds silly, it’s like goats cheese, I can’t stand it. So yes, it’s my nan’s roast dinner.

What perfume do you remember your mum or dad wearing?
I more remember my nan’s which was L’air du Temps. I can see it now with those two doves on it. I smell it now and it reminds me of an old woman. Oh that sounds terrible, but I relate it to an older woman. It was my nan’s smell … that and Imperial Leather. Can you classify that as perfume? Yes, Imperial Leather soap.

What was the perfume of your twenties?
It was either Red Door, and what was the other one I used to use? Oh it was the one with the exclamation mark on it, what was it called? It was a round white bottle with a black lid. (I gently pointed out that it was called Exclamation!) Yes, Exclamation for when I was on the Raz. I remember I was fifteen and it was the first night I ever went out wearing it, and I’m not being funny, they must have smelled me from a mile off because I just piled it on. No one came near me that night.

What was your biggest perfume mistake?
D’you know, I decided I was going to treat myself and I didn’t even smell it, but it was Chanel, the original No5. It just doesn’t smell right on me. It’s really true that perfumes either sit on you or they don’t, and they smell different on everyone, but that did smell like a rancid pile of poopie on me. It was really weird, you could see peoples faces change. It wasn’t a good experience.

You can only choose one perfume, what would it be?
J’Adore. It’s just something that I’ve always, always loved and I wear a lot. Yes, J’Adore.

What perfume should I try?
Tom Ford does some gorgeous ones, I love Noir, but I did buy for my fella the Boss Orange Man, and that was really nice and quite tangy. So yes, Tom Ford Noir or Boss Orange Man.
