STEPHAN'S SIX - JANE MONHEIT

Jane Monheit was described by the New York Times as having "a voice of phenomenal beauty", and anyone that has heard her will definitely agree. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, she released her first album, Never Never Land, in 2000 and it took the industry by storm. Twelve albums later I thought it was about time that we found out about her scented history during “Stephan’s Six”.

What is the first smell that you can remember?
I’m not sure, really, but one thing that stands out from my childhood is the Vichy moisturiser my mother wore. She’d buy it in Europe on trips with my father, and it was always the last thing I’d smell before going to sleep when she kissed me goodnight. The Vichy you can buy here in the US doesn’t smell like that anymore which is a shame. If it did I’d slather myself in it. It was absolutely wonderful.

What was the first perfume you remember your mum or dad wearing?
My father never wore anything, but my mother had a collection of terribly elegant fragrances that she’d wear on special occasions. I specifically remember Paris by YSL (which I spilled as a child and still haven’t lived it down), Alfred Sung, and in addition to that she’d wear one note fragrances like lily of the valley and lavender.

What was the perfume of your twenties?
My favourite perfume of my twenties was one I still love to wear, Jo Malone’s Wild Fig & Cassis. It’s so untraditional, so fresh and green and interesting in every way. I never like to wear things that are too sweet or feminine. It always reminds me of such wonderful times, most especially two beautiful weeks I spent with my husband in San Francisco. We were playing the Plush Room at the York Hotel (now Feinstein’s at the Nikko) and spent our days walking around the city. I think of it every time I wear that fragrance.

What was your biggest perfume mistake?
I haven’t had one yet, thank goodness!!! That I know of!

You can only choose one perfume?
For me, now, I think that would be Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino. I’ve worn it constantly for the last couple of years. It’s clean and uncomplicated, can be dressed up or down, and I love how it works with the beautiful California weather. It’s my absolute favourite.

What perfume should I try?
If I were to advise someone to try a fragrance, I’d say to try one from the opposite gender. I personally love wearing traditionally masculine scents, and I love something softer and warmer on my husband. I think it’s always fun to try something unexpected rather than doing what’s easy or popular. A fragrance should be entirely individual ... I’d never want to remind someone of anyone else.
