Samantha Scriven started writing about fragrance as a challenge to see if she could review one scent every day for a year, and that was back in 2013. Since then she has continued the blog, gone on to write freelance and was also nominated for a 2017 Fragrance Foundation Jasmine Award. After reviewing thousands of scents, what would Samantha choose for herself during “Stephan’s Six”?
What is the first smell that you can remember?
The first smell that I can remember is probably my Nana’s house. It was the unmistakable scent of coffee, mints and Zoflora disinfectant. Pure happiness! I still use Zoflora and eat Polos just like she did, although my house never quite smells as nice as hers though.
My Mum has always worn perfume and from very early in my life she was an Avon fan. I distinctly remember her wearing Avon Tasha and Avon Foxfire, although these days she prefers orientals and musks. Dad wore Tabac by Maurer & Wirtz and also smelled of Imperial Leather soap. That smell made me cry with homesickness once when I was at university.
What was the perfume of your twenties?
This one is easy. I wore Chanel Cristalle from the age of twenty-one until I was thirty-six. Every time I smell Cristalle it’s like watching a montage of my twenties flash through my head like a cine film. It was also my wedding day fragrance in 2006 but I stopped wearing it when I had my babies. I still love it, but wearing it makes me think of the past and not the present or future.
What was your biggest perfume mistake?
Spraying Thierry Mugler Womanity invoked a dramatic reaction in me. It repelled me so much I nearly ran out of my own house. In other news, as a perfume obsessive I do often get looks when I say to random strangers, “Mmm, you smell nice.” I can’t help myself. I sit alone on buses sniffing the air. Not always a good plan.
You can only choose one perfume?
Oh, that’s asking a lot. Just one? Ouch. Aedes de Venustas' Pelargonium had me at hello and it is my plan to own a few gallons of this one day. There are easily another nine answers I could have given here, but that's for me to know.
What perfume should I try?
I would like to smell more rose fragrances on men. I think rose smells terrific on male skin and Andy Tauer’s Incense Rose or Rose Flash would be a good start. I love them both.
