HOPE by Tessa Williams

There have been many occasions where the original direction of a product has taken a different route because of events that are out of a company’s control. This isn't always a bad thing, in fact it's a compliment when it becomes a source of comfort. In unsettling times it often feels reassuring to reach for a product that affirms a positive message, and this is what has happened with the most recent launch from Tessa Williams. Always intended as the conclusion to her scented trilogy, Hope has recently become a fragranced wish that many have chosen to turn to in these challenging times.

Tessa Williams is probably still best known as the author of two bestselling books that dealt with the luxury lifestyle. Her first was Cult Perfumes: The World’s Most Exclusive Perfumeries, which was released in 2013. It looked in detail at many of the most famous, and emerging, perfume companies, and busted some myths at the same time. This was followed up in 2018 with Hotels of the Stars, the ultimate coffee table travel experience that made you yearn for a larger bank balance. Throughout this period, Tessa always maintained a love of fragrance and this resulted in the release of her Elements collection.

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water were originally launched as candles and room sprays. Described as “enigmatic and beguiling” with an “elegant and heady air of decadence,” their vibrancy saw many people starting to use them as perfumes, and so Tessa reworked the formulas and rereleased Earth, Fire, and Water as Living Colognes. It seemed as if she had tapped into a desire for cologne-like scents that had the lasting power of a perfume, and these three certainly came through on that promise. Also, with a price tag of £29.95 for 50ml, they were easily accesible.

The follow up to the Living Colognes collection saw a fragrance trio that was designed to form an emotional love letter. Launched over two years, the series would become a second strand to the fragrance range but, when life suddenly changed in recent weeks, one of these took on a new meaning. Faith had an oriental structure and contrasted it with a hit of earl grey, Love concentrated on the intoxicating floral blend of tuberose and gardenia, but Hope seems to have reconnected with the desires of Tessa’s customers. Fragrance can give a well needed boost in challenging times, and Hope delivers what it promises.

There will be many summer fragrances launched in the coming months and Hope opens with the recognisably uplifting hit of citrus. A zesty blend of bergamot, orange, and lime is given a piercing brightness with a combination of neroli and galbanum. As the fragrance develops you start to get notes of rose and davana. This gives an apricot quality that links beautifully down to a delicately earthly blend of vetiver and patchouli. You do get a hint of vanilla and musk towards the end, but Hope is all about the uplifting zesty floral journey that is guaranteed to add a positive note to your day.

There is currently a 40% discount across all of Tessa Williams’ website at tessawilliams.co.uk using the code STAYHOME40, which takes the price of Hope down from £29.95 to £18 for 50ml. [Sample provided by Tessa Williams]
