Every country has their own particular phrases that truly embody the spirit of the inhabitants. The United Kingdom is abundant with them, but the two that instantly spring to mind are “Would you like a cup of tea?” and “It’s about time”. The former is the British answer to whatever catastrophe might occur, while the second is our sarcastic side-eye comment after having to wait for absolutely anything. So it’s wonderfully appropriate that, after what seems like the longest and wettest winter, we can finally welcome the arrival of spring with the gloriously aromatic About Thyme from Lizzie Brooks and Thursday Fragrance.
New perfume companies often launch with either a blaze of glory or slowly under the radar. They gain a loyal following that keeps them afloat, but doesn’t necessarily continue as time passes. Thursday Fragrance originally launched in 2023 and, while it didn’t cause major tremors through the perfume industry, it did attract a loyal fan base that continued over the next three years. 2026 marks a shift in the fortunes of the company, as they enter the Fragrance Foundation Next Gen Accelerator Programme, and is definitely the year that their trio of fragrances will cause some seismic activity.
Lizzie Brooks is the founder of Thursday Fragrance and trained under the skilful eye of perfumer Karen Gilbert. She had always had a fascination with scent, and a desire to create her own collection, but it was the encouragement of her partner that finally gave the project wings. She created a debut trio of fragrances called Marzi, About Thyme, and Magic + Science, and they were a real breath of fresh air in a perfume market that was saturated with “beast mode” and “date night” scents. I wrote about Magic + Science back in 2023 but, three years later, it’s definitely “About Thyme” for a revisit.
The inspiration for About Thyme came from a visit to Crete. Lizzie Brooks vividly recalled the way that the sunshine hitting the thyme leaves, on the dry coastal terrain, conjured so many facets within the herb. There was a warmth, along with a depth, that took it to a whole new level of enjoyment. As the Thursday Fragrance brand is all about capturing “moments of joy and delight”, Lizzie set to work realising the experience whilst also taming what she calls the herb’s “Sunday roast association”. The result is a deliciously warm aromatic that joyfully screams “here comes the sun”. Are you ready to discover About Thyme?
The fragrance opens with a skilful blend of bergamot and lavender, so you immediately get that aromatic sunshine quality, before being quickly joined by the carefully tempered aroma of the thyme. Its green and peppery notes make an early link to the oakmoss in the base, which cleverly conjures the arid terrain of the region, before a slightly fizzy sandalwood brings to mind sun-warned skin and a wonderful feeling of contentment. The perfume continues to delight with an earthy vetiver and a creamy tonka bean providing a almond-edged nod to the region, before a final whisper of resinous labdanum hints at the evening warmth to come. About Thyme is a fantastic fragrance as we enter spring, and the expert combination of the fougere and chypre styles creates a true unisex scent that is irresistible.
About Thyme is available from the Thursday Fragrance website at thursdayfragrance.co.uk priced at £80 for 50ml. All three scents Fromm the collection are also available as a Discovery Set priced at £20. [Sample provided by Thursday Fragrance]
