Mother's Day is almost upon us and the usual quandary of what present to buy rears its head again. Ultimately most Mums are happy with whatever they are given, although from personal experience I always find that the card is the most important part. If you haven't bought anything yet then the chances are that it will be a mad dash to the high street on Saturday with a slight "rabbit in the headlights" look. So, with this in mind, I thought it would be useful to suggest some fragrances that make the perfect present. There are three to choose from with very different price tags, but each is guaranteed to make your mum feel special.
I’m going to start with something a little bit off centre and look at the latest addition to the Estée Lauder Modern Muse range, Le Rouge Gloss. Originally a Boots exclusive at the end of 2016, this has now been rolled out to all stores. It takes the recognisable form of Modern Muse, a duality between two different accords, but this time labels them “red gloss accord” and “red vinyl accord”. The overall impression is of a lipstick-like creaminess that links beautifully to a berry floral. You get some rich base notes in this composition which include patchouli, labdanum and a “bio vanillin” (this is where the ingredient is created using a yeast instead of synthetically) but they are balanced by rose, jasmine and a juicy black cherry note. It’s fun, it’s easy to wear, and it’s available at £46 for 30ml.
Number two is going to be Pivoine by Fragonard, which is their celebrated flower for 2017 and available from Marks and Spencer at £18 for 50ml. I featured this in an earlier review but it is a perfect fragrance for those on a stricter budget. Fragonard have made their annual floral a staple of the range and every year it always delivers. This time they have created a voluptuous interpretation of Peony, with a smooth fruity tone, and it is very easy to wear. Through red fruits and iris comes the combination of jasmine and mimosa to provide an uplifting freshness. Alongside a nice dose of white musk and amber, you have the recipe for a very fun spring/summer fragrance.
No list would be complete without a classic fragrance and so this year I’ve plumped for Diorissimo by Dior. A hark back to the romantic 1950s, Diorissimo is the perfect lily of the valley scent. It was created by Edmond Roudnitska in 1956 and has truly stood the test of time. With the addition of ylang ylang and jasmine the scent becomes heady and enveloping, something which is accentuated by the bergamot in the opening. Sandalwood in the base gives a wonderful smoothness but you never loose that beautiful lily of the valley. Priced at £58 for 50ml it’s a little piece of history, but guaranteed to make any mother smile.
Whatever you choose to buy as a gift just remember that it’s the thought that counts, although if you’re at all unsure then make sure you get a gift receipt. Happy Mother’s Day.
