Disappearing into a book is something that was instilled into me from childhood, and it’s still a wonderful alternative to costly airfares and long journeys. Jane Johnson is a Cornish author who splits her time between Mousehole and Morocco, and is lucky enough to work from home as a Fiction Publishing Director for HarperCollins. Her latest book, The Black Crescent, uses scented descriptions to help conjure emotions and locations, and so it’s the perfect time to discover her own fragrance memories in “Stephan’s Six”.

The emergence of self-taught perfumers continues to create wonderfully artistic waves in the perfume industry, and the latest person to try his hand is self-confessed wanderer Freddie Albrighton. This successful tattooist launches his debut collection on Saturday and so, to get us in the mood for the arrival of Mabel’s Tooth, Boys, and Bernadette Margaret Evelyn Theresa, it's time to find out his scented secrets during “Stephan’s Six.”

STEPHAN'S SIX - BARBARA HERMAN
Barbara Herman became well known to the fragrance community through Yesterday’s Perfume, a blog which concentrated on her love of vintage scents. This subsequently inspired her bestselling book, Scent & Subversion, and sowed the seeds for her own perfume range, Eris Parfums. With a fascination for classic fragrances, I wondered what scented secrets Barbara would reveal during “Stephan’s Six”.

NATURAL v SYNTHETIC
Every couple of weeks you see the same topic raise its weary head again. I say "weary" because you always get the same points presented by both sides and neither will budge in their dogmatic opinion. They each try to win an argument that is fundamentally based on the misconception that natural is always good and synthetic is always bad. I've lost count of the number of times that I've heard "everything smells synthetic these days". So, for the final time, naturals and synthetics each have their own place and when used in combination can create truly mind-blowing fragrances. Still don't believe me?

LA PETITE ROBE NOIRE INTENSE - The Imitation Game
When Guerlain launched La Petite Robe Noire Eau Fraîche in 2015 everyone presumed that the wardrobe was complete. That fourth release, or sixth depending on how you're counting, was a "fresh" interpretation and complimented the other three. However, just when Guerlain fans breathed a collective sigh of relief William Lescure, president of Guerlain Canada, dropped the bombshell that there was an exclusive "sweeter" version on the horizon, but it soon became clear that it would actually be a worldwide release. The new edition, La Petite Robe Noire Intense, is really good, but then I've been enjoying it for four years already!

STEPHAN'S SIX - SUZY NIGHTINGALE
A well known face at perfume launches and events, Suzy Nightingale was born in Kent and very quickly developed a love of fragrance. After working for various websites and publications the position of Senior Writer for the Perfume Society became available, and she jumped at it. Under the expert guidance of Jo Fairley, a co-founder of the society, Suzy has gone on to win a coveted Jasmine Award for fragrance writing. So, with the spotlight firmly on her for a change, what would we learn about Suzy during "Stephan's Six"?

STEPHAN'S SIX - THOMAS DUNCKLEY (CandyPerfumeBoy)
Perfume bloggers are two a penny, I know because I'm one of that crowd. What is different about some though is that their passion and measured approach are in perfect unison. That is the way to best describe Thomas Dunckley who created the enigma that is CandyPerfumeBoy. A Jasmine Award winner and a self-confessed champion for Mugler’s Angel, what would we learn about his wider fragranced memories during “Stephan’s Six”?

STEPHAN'S SIX - KAREN GILBERT
Many people teach perfumery but very few are able claim the industry experience that Karen Gilbert can. She worked as a fragrance evaluator for many years before starting her own teaching and consultancy business, and her courses are always inspirational. A regular at perfumery events, what secrets would she reveal during "Stephan's Six"?

STEPHAN'S SIX - DANNY YOUNG
Since he started acting in 2001 Danny has built up an enviable list of credits, but he is still fondly remembered for his role as Warren Baldwin, Bradley Walsh’s son in Coronation Street. He continued to work as an actor and presenter when he left the soap in 2006 but it was his performances on Dancing On Ice in 2010 that really got temperatures rising. After taking a short break to concentrate on his fitness training he’s back, larger than life, and ready to set pulses racing again. So, what would he reveal during “Stephan’s Six”?
