The Car Freshener Collection from Lynx

When we think about scent the first things that usually come to our mind are perfumes and candles. We’re so used to wearing our favourite fragrance, or filling a room with the aroma of everything from Yankee Candle’s vanilla through to Gwyneth Paltrow’s fabled vagina, that we’ve forgotten a vital space that really benefits from some scent. We generally spend around four years of our lives behind the wheel of a car and so it’s time we started enjoying it. There are many car fresheners on the market, but one of the most novel must surely be the collection from Lynx. So, as we celebrate its first birthday, let’s go for a drive.

YOU ... The New Fragrance From Lynx

They're at it again and they've called back the big guns for the launch of their latest body fragrance! I'm talking about Lynx, or Axe if you live outside of the United Kingdom. Once treated with derision, or at best referred to as the scent of a teenage boy, they have recently started to command a real share of the perfume industry. With the launch of their Daily Fragrance range last year they managed to reposition themselves in an older market, and finally gain the recognition that they deserve. Forget Apollo, Phoenix and even Africa, 2017 sees the appearance of YOU and you're in for a very pleasant surprise.

FIVE OF THE BEST

So we’re well and truly into the Christmas season now with queues starting to form and products selling out. Are you still looking for inspiration? Well, every day in the run up to Christmas I’m posting things on Twitter which might be helpful for the perfumistas that you need to buy for, but there’s also twelve months of reviews on here for you to look through. I guessed that you probably don’t have much time so I’ve had a rummage thought the files myself and picked out five of my favourite products which I think would make excellent gifts. Hopefully one of these might be added to your cart by the end of the day.

STEPHAN'S SIX - JO FAIRLEY

When Jo left school at sixteen with six ‘O’ levels she knuckled down, worked hard, and became the youngest-ever UK magazine editor when she joined Look Now at twenty-three. Alongside that she had always had a love of fragrance, and so it seemed inevitable that Jo would go on to co-found The Perfume Society with Lorna McKay. After winning a Jasmine Award for her fragrant writing, I thought it was time that we turned the tables and discovered her scented secrets during “Stephan’s Six”.

LYNX - THE NEW FINE FRAGRANCE

They’re at it again! Love them or hate them there is no getting away from them. I am talking about LYNX, or AXE if you live outside of the UK. As I’ve said in the past, they were originally used with the same gusto as Brut, their older relative. They stormed the market in 1983 with Amber, Musk and Spice before tempting in a new generation with a more “homage” approach. Body Sprays that resembled Fahrenheit, Aqua Manda, even Guerlain’s L’Instant started appearing in 2008, and I’ve mentioned these affordable creations in a previous article. However, this year has seen the launch of the first three scents in their Daily Fragrance range. A departure for the brand because this time they are taking a more “fragrance trend” approach, and I guarantee that people are going to be shocked. So, let’s take a look at the power three and see whether you’re Signature, Urban or Adrenaline.

Lizzie Ostrom's Century Of Scents

When Lizzie Ostrom (aka Odette Toilette) first told me that she was writing a book about perfume I remember thinking, how will you get the character of this eccentric into print? Lizzie is anything but predictable, and she has made her reputation by taking perfume and turning it on its head. Anyone who has witnessed her in action knows that her quirky style and approachable manner is what keeps you coming back for more. So, would this translate into print? There have many dry, dusty and pretentious books about perfume over the years which use language that even Countdown's Dictionary Corner would struggle with, but this is not one of them.

The LYNX effect

We've come a long way since the days of Atlantis and Inca, but the 1983 phenomenon of Lynx (or Axe if you live outside of the UK) shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Originally used with the same gusto as its older relative Brut, it was the staple of every changing room in the eighties and nineties. It's because the products were always so heavily fragranced, and were used to excess by teenagers, that the whole range still carries the unfair stigma of those early years. So, whilst it's still looked down on with derision by many people, is there a place for the Lynx body spray in the perfumed world of 2015?
