If you’re a perfume fan then you can’t have failed to notice that the number of new releases every year continues to grow. An exact figure is impossible to calculate, but we’re definitely in the thousands rather than the hundreds. This is a far cry from the days when companies would launch a new fragrance possibly every three to four years, it now feels more like one every three to four months. So, finding “your” perfume amongst the noise can be an almighty challenge. Enter Fario who, with the release of their Autograph fragrance, have tackled the issue of originality head-on in their debut signature scent.
Finding a new fragrance is nothing like it used to be in the old days of the high-street department store. Customers would walk in, head to their respective gender section, and pick from a selection of perfumes that had television, magazine and billboard promotion proclaiming them as the new “it” scents. It’s the internet world, and especially TikTok, that provides the shop windows these days, although independent boutiques like Soliflore, Parfum Le Dance and Stéle are still championing that one-on-one service. However, what do you do if you can’t find your signature scent? Hussein Ahmed took matters into his own hands.
Hussein had always loved buying and wearing fragrance, and considered it as the finishing touch if he was heading to work or heading out in the evening. What he started to find though was, however much he tried, his favourite perfumes would always end up being worn by those around him. Feeling that his individuality was fading, he decided he wanted to make his own “signature scent”. Obviously there are many workshops where you can create an interesting, if not particularly wearable, scent, but he decided to go all out and launch a brand instead.
Hussein Ahmed launched Fario with a collection of oil-based fragrances, two of which are now also traditional EDPs. Fleur de Nuit captures an incense, wood and Turkish rose combination, while the signature Autograph features coffee, dried fruits and silky resins. As creative director, Hussein worked closely with his perfumer to realise his perfect fragrance, and the result really is something special. While the fragrance is the same in both the oil and the EDP, the former definitely sits closer to the skin for a more intimate experience. “Sophisticated” is a word that’s overused to describe fragrance, but it was made for Autograph.
The fragrance opens with a bergamot and incense pairing, so you get that citrusy resin quality from the outset, but it’s quickly joined by a note of davana, with its boozy dried fruit facet. This is then added to by the promised roasted coffee bean aroma, which is deliciously understated, before an earthy patchouli provides an additional woodiness to the scent. You do get a hint of jasmine in the heart but, again, it’s very carefully balanced so that it adds to the overall scent rather than detracting. The development of the fragrance sees a wonderfully smooth amber accord come through, with the merest hint of animalic labdanum, but the addition of a sweetened musk and cedarwood completes the perfect signature scent.
Autograph is available from the Fario website at fariofragrances.com priced at £125 for 50ml. It’s also available in an oil format with prices starting from £30. [Sample provided by Fario]
