PURNIMA FRAGRANCES - Scented For Success

The Rose candle from Purnima Fragrances
The dark days of the pandemic may seem like a lifetime ago now, as we all busy ourselves once again on life’s hamster wheel, but it has meant a massive shift in the perfume market. Those two years focused our attention away from personal fragrance, that beautiful juice found inside a glass bottle, and instead made us think about the scent of our surroundings. With so much time spent indoors, and without the option to travel, we all wanted some scented escape. That initial fragranced flurry saw many candle brands unfortunately fall by the wayside, but the demand had been ignited and it heralded the arrival of Purnima Fragrances.

Candle and home fragrance brands sprung up at an incredible rate in 2020 and 2021, with many capitalising on the “stay at home” instructions. While initial sales were strong, a lack of originality and proper costings saw a large chunk of these disappear as quickly as they had arrived. The ones that stuck it out developed loyal followings and, once lockdown was lifted, the increasing trend of working from home continued the need and passion for the perfect scented surroundings. Remember, perfumes can mean costly mistakes, but you’re always pretty safe with a candle or a diffuser.

Purnima Bullee had never intended to launch her own home fragrance company. Originally training as an electronics engineer, she found herself drawn to a more creative path and, as she told me, became fascinated by how “physical and internal space can be created through fragrance”. Personal memories of her early life in Mauritius came to the surface, and it was this idea of intimacy that she wanted to recreate and, ultimately, share. From the very beginning, Purnima was committed to both the appearance and the perfume, and that shines brightly in her debut collection of four scents.

The Ambar room diffuser from Purnima Fragrances
Black glass and clean lines is the way to describe the candles and diffusers from Purnima Fragrances, because the diffusers have a discreet name towards the bottom of the bottle, while the candles have an arched ivory label against a tapered jar. However, as a nod to quintessential luxury, the four fragrances also come in hand-finished ceramic pots that weight in at an impressive 1750kg. Made in Stoke-on-Trent, these are spectacular, and a must for every candle lover. The fragrances consist of Boronia, with its orange blossom-esque facets, and Encens, displaying a smoky leather. However, it’s Rose and Ambar that bewitched me.

The Rose fragrance takes the classic floral scent, so popular in candles, but presents it with a deliciously green edge. You have the whole plant here, both the velvety petals along with the sappy stem, but it’s given an earthiness thanks to a touch of patchouli and cedarwood. This is the perfect scent to bring the “outside inside”. The Ambar fragrance is my star though, with its cedarwood and resinous Peru balsam signifying the perfect amber base. It’s added to with a deliciously textural plum note, but the addition of iris and cinnamon create a spectacular aroma that, in a diffuser, throws out an intoxicating scent. There are many candle brands out there, but Purnima Fragrances is definitely set for success.

The full collection of candles and diffusers is available from the Purnima Fragrances website at purnimafragrances.com with prices starting from £45. [Samples provided by Purnima Bullee]
