AMBER K by Sonia Constant

The Amber family of perfumes is one that often finds itself relegated to the colder months, when its resins come alive under layers of coats and scarves, but there is so much more to enjoy if you just take the chance. Vanilla notes, sweetened woods, even some patchouli-laced cocoa; it’s all waiting to be discovered on warmed skin and under the fading sunshine. Admittedly finding the perfect balance of warmth to match every season can be challenging, but it’s been expertly executed under the skilled nose of Sonia Constant. Amber K is the latest addition to her Ella K collection, and the result is truly mesmerising.

Sonia Constant is not a new name in the world of perfumery, but the range of her creations is something that you might find surprising. She has created fragrances that span the price points, and is a great example that a talented perfumer can work within any constraint and still create a scent that is exceptional. Her Muguet fragrance, created for Fragonard back in 2013, is one of the finest recreations of this flower, and her 2021 perfume I Want Choo championed the idea of free-spirited femininity. Her crowning glory however must surely be the launch of her own collection, Ella K.

Inspired by the idea of exploration, and the strength of female travellers that had gone before her, Sonia Constant launched Ella K in 2019. Drawing on the spirit of the likes of Ella Maillart, Karen Blixen and Alexandra David-Neel, the concept was to take the wearer to undisturbed locations, and present a scented snapshot that would linger in the memory. Unsurprisingly, the collection has gone on to become an award winner and, just like the perfumer herself, has travelled the globe with its perfumed passports. The latest stop sees us taking in the sights and smells of Punta Cana, and it’s a scented journey that cannot be missed.

Capturing the aromas of a destination is what has fuelled the Ella K collection, and the latest addition continues this tradition. Inspired by the scents of the spiderlily flower cutting across a Dominican cigar, Sonia has managed to create a perfume that embraces both feminine and masculine notes, but presents it in a genderless celebration of scent. As I mentioned before, amber fragrances can often be resin-heavy affairs that become season specific. However, Amber K refocuses this and the result is an insanely wearable scent that is destined to become your must-have for 2025. It’s time to discover some Sonia Constant magic.

Amber K opens with an immediate rush of pink pepper, but is quickly joined by a pairing of the floral spider lily alongside a dose of woody cocoa bean. This floral note really does have a beautiful delicacy that is captivating. You then get the impression of an Havana cigar, with its hay-like qualities, and an almost honeyish trail, before a touch of cedarwood adds a dryness to the blend. This woody note is joined by patchouli which, locking onto the cocoa, creates a bitter chocolate aroma. However, a measured sweetness is in store thanks to a smooth wash of vanilla and incense, before a labdanum-charged amber accord completes the perfect balance of warmth and wearability.

Amber K is available from Ella K at ellakparfums.com priced at £250 for 100ml. You can also click on the image below to read Sonia Constant’s "Stephan's Six" interview from 2019. [Sample provided by Aspects Beauty]
