The concept of a product having a well-being effect is nothing new in the world of perfume and beauty, although in recent years it's almost become a subset of the industry. Whether we’re talking fragrance, skincare, or surround scenting, the overall scent now goes hand-in-hand with the emotional and mental benefits that the aroma will give to the wearer. The wellness market is a natural extension of the aromatherapy arena, but in a more high-street setting. One of the companies exploring this is College Green and, after their highly successful Sleep Easy Pillow & Room Mist, they’re back with the wonderfully uplifting Focus Room Mist.
A fragrance having a “well-being” effect on the user has become big business in the years since we just casually reached for citrus to energise, lavender to relax, and warm ambers to calm. Yes, this simple rule of three has worked for generations, but we’ve become a little more proof-focused in recent years. Le Jardin Retrouvé were the first perfume house to have their fragrances scientifically verified by Givaudan as to the scented benefits that they provide, hotly followed by numerous others including Radox with their “mood-boosting” shower gels. However, there’s still room for a more traditional approach.
College Green was originally founded in 2017 by Rachael Lythgoe and started life as an artisan soap manufacturer. Based in the Cotswolds, the range gradually increased to candles, diffusers, and a bestselling collection of truly fantastic bath salts. Being a small producer, her candles and diffusers had always used bought-in fragrances, but the Sleep Easy Pillow & Room Mist was her first exclusive scent. Formulated especially for College Green, this alcohol-based spritz worked wonderfully at encouraging sleep when sprayed onto pillows or in the room, but was equally popular as a scarf scent. So, naturally, customers wanted more.
The years since Covid have seen many employees remain in a work-from-home situation, but keeping focused and positive when physically distanced from colleagues can often be a problem. Rachel Lythgoe has decided to tackle this with a room spray that can help promote a feeling of focus and clarity. The uses of the Focus Room Mist go far beyond just working from home because it’s actually ideal for any space in the home - and again is stunning when spritzed onto a scarf or a beach towel. It’s a brave move for a small company to create an exclusive fragrance, but College Green have nailed it for a second time.
The Focus Room Mist cleverly opens with the aromatic green trio of rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint. This combination literally pulls the scent in both directions with the rosemary offering a deeper capherous aroma while the remaining two soar upwards. It’s piercingly refreshing, like loading up your mouth with fizzing sherbet, especially when the citruses arrive. The pairing of lemon and pink grapefruit, with both sharp and sweet sides, combine to offer you that hit of energy so associated with these notes. With a final touch of frankincense, which apparently is used in rituals to free the mind of ego, you really are treated to a room mist that is uplifting, cheerful and packs a well-needed burst of summer sunshine.
Focus Room Mist is available from the College Green website at naturalsoap.shop priced at £15 for 100ml. [Sample provided by the company]
