Fashion and fragrance have a long history of collaboration, from Chanel and Worth through to Gaultier and Versace, but there's another side of the rag trade that has inspired perfumed patterning. The male tailoring industry is one that manages to encompass all age groups and social standings and, thanks in part to the sharp silhouettes and tweed accents of the Peaky Blinders, the resurgence in tailor-made clothing brings with it a need for a fragranced flourish to finish the ensemble. So, if you’re looking for refined elegance with a traditional cut, look no further than Mayfair from The Savile Row Company.
Tailoring isn’t an industry that is just reserved for the United Kingdom, some of the finest silhouettes and trends have come from Italy, but we do have a history of looking dapper. This is what Gerry Doltis tapped into when he first launched The Savile Row Company back in 1938. His expertise and attention to detail quickly gained him a reputation for the finest made-to-measure suits, and so it’s hardly surprising that his designs were soon to be seen on both royalty and the stars of the day. However, the original success was to be interrupted by war.
First he was called up for National Service, then the London factory was bombed, but his determination was as secure as his stitching. After returning from the war, he found new premises, started supplying the best department stores, and a legacy was reinvigorated. Control of the company eventually moved to Gerry’s son, Jeffrey Doltis, and he now runs it with his daughter. Keeping The Savile Row Company in family hands has definitely meant that both tradition and customer loyalty has been protected and, in a world where there is so much choice, this is something to be celebrated.
The Savile Row Company fragrances originally arrived around 2017 and consisted of three aromatic scents that each focused on a specific fougere, fruity or spicy facet - in the form of Heritage, Regent and Mayfair. Whilst the original trio were popular, fashion turned more towards eau de parfums, and so it was decided to reinvigorate the collection. Mayfair was picked to be the new star fragrance, with the formulation revisited to meet a more modern audience. This led it to becoming a finalist in the 2024 Pure Beauty Awards, and meant that its golden livery is now a regular feature up and down the United Kingdom.
Mayfair opens with a massive hit of bergamot and cardamom, so you’re instantly treated to a gloriously arresting green spiced citrus quality, but there’s also an early arrival of lavender with its purple aromatic touch. The latter’s slightly campherous hint is softened by a well-rounded orange blossom, and an aquatic wash feels as if it helps to provide a feeling of tailored styling and tradition to the fragrance. The development of Mayfair then sees a tonka bean and resinous labdanum come into play, alongside a woody patchouli and dry vetiver, before a dash of suede completes a wonderfully refined and addictive fragrance. Part fougere, part aquatic, with a touch of chypre… the perfect combination for autumn.
Mayfair is available from The Savile Row Company website at savilerowfragrance.com priced at £85 for 100ml or £50 for 50ml. It’s also available as a beard oil and a shower gel. [Sample provided by Lauren Macaskill]
