STEPHAN'S SIX - SIERRA BOGGESS

Sierra Boggess Broadway Actress

An Olivier Award nominated actress, Sierra Boggess made her Broadway debut playing Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, but is probably still best known for her role as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies. She's currently putting the finishing touches to her new album with actor Julian Ovenden, Together... at a Distance, so I thought it was a good time to learn more about her fragrance memories during “Stephan’s Six”.

What is the first smell that you can remember?
That would be my grandparents' attic! They had this old house in Rock Island, Illinois with an attic full of the treasures from their life. My sisters, cousins, and I went up there every time we visited and spent hours rummaging through everything. We used to find all kinds of interesting stuff. The memory makes me feel sentimental, and connected, and excited, and mischievous, and comforted. It really is a smell I can recall at any time and it takes me right back.

Shalimar Guerlain Sierra Boggess Interview
What was the first perfume you remember your parents wearing?
My mother wore Shalimar by Guerlain, and I remember that whenever I smelled it on her I knew she and my dad were going somewhere special. Neither my mother or father ever wore, or even wear today, perfume or cologne on a regular basis. It was always definitely for very special occasions. So I guess that’s probably why I always used to think that perfume was only for fancy people.

What was the perfume of your twenties?
That would definitely be Clinique Happy!! I don’t even have to think twice about that. I actually still have it as well because, to my nose at least, it’s still the perfect blend to this day.

What was your biggest perfume mistake?
Well that would be wearing too much of one. That moment when you first get a new perfume and just go over the top with it! Or when you go shopping for perfumes and just try too many directly onto your skin, and it feels like even a shower can’t get them off!

You can only choose one perfume?
It’s not a perfume as such, it’s the vanilla essential oil that I wear now. For me vanilla is my “go to” scent, but it has to be the right kind of vanilla - warm but not too candle-store-y. I like it because it doesn’t feel intrusive, it’s simple, and I trust it’s not an “offensive” scent.

What perfume should I try?
Well I always think perfume is so personal, so it would be a mistake for me to tell you which to try. BUT, if you want to go on the Sierra journey then try Clinique Happy from my twenties or vanilla essential oil from my “now” times. However, let me know if they ever bottle the scent of my grandparents attic. [Well, you could try Lamplight Penance from St Louis-based Chatillon Lux or, if you’re missing your time in the UK, there’s The Lion Cupboard from 4160 Tuesdays].
